Person changing a flat tire

A flat tire is never a welcome sight, but if you know how to respond, that can certainly help. Our Mercedes-Benz service experts at Mercedes-Benz of Romeoville are sharing how to change a flat tire, so you never find yourself stranded.

Practice Safety First

If you’re driving when you get a flat, try to navigate to a safe area away from traffic. It’s best to change a flat tire on a hard and flat surface. Turn your hazard lights on, engage your parking brake, and add wheel wedges, if you have them.

Get Prepared

Before you start, make sure you have everything you need. You’ll need your jack and a lug wrench. Check your spare tire before you put it on your vehicle to make sure it doesn’t have any issues.

Raise Your Vehicle

Use your lug wrench to carefully loosen the lug nuts on your flat tire, but don’t remove them completely. Every vehicle has jack points, which are the places under your vehicle to place the jack without damaging it. Check your owner’s manual if you’re unsure of your jack points, but they are typically solid metal surfaces under your vehicle near each wheel. Use the jack to slowly raise your vehicle about six inches from the ground.

Replace Your Tire

Next, remove the lug nuts completely and put them somewhere safe. Remove your flat tire and replace it with your spare, making sure to line it up with your wheel studs. Loosely replace your lug nuts and lower your vehicle to the ground. Once it’s on the ground, move the jack and tighten your lug nuts completely.
