How it Works
Mercedes-Benz PRE-SAFE® uses information from a network of vehicle sensors to recognize certain critical driving situations. If the system detects instability during certain maneuvers that suggests a collision or rollover may be imminent, it can take precautionary measures to help prepare occupants and the vehicle’s restraint systems for a potential impact. If no accident occurs, certain PRE-SAFE® measures can be reversed.
PRE-SAFE® is designed to prepare occupants for certain potential impacts rather than prevent a collision, so it works alongside — but serves a different purpose from — Mercedes-Benz driver-assistance technologies.
Mercedes-Benz PRE-SAFE® Actions
When activated, PRE-SAFE® can take several precautionary measures to help prepare occupants for a potential collision. The system can tighten the driver and front-passenger seat belts, adjust the front-passenger seat to a more favorable position, and initiate closing of the side windows and sunroof. These actions are designed to better prepare occupants and the vehicle’s restraint systems in the moments before a potential impact.
Additional Mercedes-Benz PRE-SAFE® Options
Depending on the model and equipment, Mercedes-Benz vehicles can offer additional PRE-SAFE® technologies designed for specific collision scenarios:
- PRE-SAFE® Sound: Generates a brief noise signal through the vehicle’s audio system to stimulate the ear’s natural protective mechanism before a potential impact.
- PRE-SAFE® Impulse Side: If an imminent side impact is detected, an air cushion in the outer front-seat bolster can rapidly inflate to move the occupant’s upper body toward the center of the vehicle, increasing the distance between the occupant and the door.
- PRE-SAFE® PLUS: Can detect certain imminent rear impacts and take precautionary measures such as tightening the driver and front-passenger seat belts. When the vehicle is stationary, the system can also increase brake pressure to help reduce forward movement from an impact.
